10th Annual Whorled Championship Mini-Disc Golf Tournament [Message #1]

A smoke signal has appeared in the East, MiniHeads!

I'm instructed to pass along to you the news that the 10th Annual Whorled Championship Mini-Disc Golf Tournament will be held on Sunday, the 20th of September 2009 - in the customary venue, at the customary hour...

More details will follow, but I can tell you now that we're thinking quite seriously of making a whole weekend out of it this year - given the fact that it's the 10th Anniversary of our little shindig. We're thinking stand-alone events on Saturday and Sunday - say, Doubles and a Skills Competition on the Saturday, and the Tournament itself on the Sunday.

I'll keep you posted...

Re: 10th Annual Whorled Championship Mini-Disc Golf Tournament [Message #7]

Well, we went for a walk a couple of weeks ago to assess potential for a doubles course at Dan Patterson C.A. Unfortunately, it will not do. Chest-high grass and weeds preclude playing there, unless you want to lose every mini in your bag.

The course at Belmont is now the front-runner - Plan B, as it were. I'll be contacting the town for permission to use the park and also some municipal land across the road from the course, which contains a large ornamental fountain. I can envision a few tasty holes bringing some water hazard into play.

We've also decided to drop the idea of a skills competition in favour of an extra round of doubles on the Saturday. I can't see our miniacs being satisfied with just one round of dubs, so there ya go.

We've got the parks permit in hand for Waterworks on the Sunday, so things are slowly coming together. Now to order some minis.

I'll keep ya posted as things develop.

Re: 10th Annual Whorled Championship Mini-Disc Golf Tournament [Message #9]

I'm also pleased to announce that the Whorled Disc Syndicate has partnered up with Discfunctional Disc Golf to present a day of Mini-Doubles in honour of the Tenth Anniversary of the Whorled Championships. This event will run on Saturday 19 September at the Belmont Disc Golf Course in Belmont, Ontario.

Discfunctional Mini-Doubles 2009:

Saturday 19 September 2009

Belmont Disc Golf Course. From the 401, take Belmont Rd (Highway 74) south to Belmont. Cross the bridge in Belmont and turn left towards the LCBO. Please do not park in front of the Fire Hall. Parking along the road is OK, as is the back row of the LCBO parking lot.

Format: Bring your own partner doubles. Sudden death playoff for first-place ties. One division - no sandbagging!

Registration 8:30 - 9:30 AM. Players' meeting 9:45 AM. Tee-off at 10:00 AM.

Entry Fee: $40 CDN per team.

Cash payouts for top third of the field.

So, if you're thinking about coming down for the Whorled Championship Mini Tourney on the Sunday, consider coming down early on the Saturday for some doubles action in a new venue. It'll probably be another ten years before we do this again!

Hey Proudy, I have a CE Valk and a CE Firebird to auction off at the Whorleds. Maybe even a San Marino Stingray, to fund my trip to Rock Hill.

I always enjoy Stocky Bobs auctions!

Cool, Juice!

I shall ask Bob to do the honours and auction them off for you, if you'd like.

When are you guys coming into town? Are you playing Dubs tomorrow?

Our American friends from the Mini Disc Golf Federation have arrived - we met them this afternoon. International competition - what more can you ask for on the 10th Annual? Should be fun.

See ya soon...

Merci, mon ami!

Safe travels - and keep workin' on Kelly. How 'bout Schultzy? There's no rain in the forecast...

It'll be good to commune with y'all in the AM. Dubs was a blast at Belmont today - we were done by 3:30 PM. Our American friends are enjoying the full campfire/many beers/fish fry treatment down in Billy's backyard as I type. Everyone is smiling.

Again, safe journey!

Re: 10th Annual Whorled Championship Mini-Disc Golf Tournament [Message #17]

Belated thanks to Proudy, his wife Donna and big Larry for their hard work.

A couple of observations/questions:

I have only played a couple of years of this tourney but does it seem to have become a little too serious? Watching Malton and some others in the final 9 was f'ing painful. It was like watching the finals at Pinafore or something...it's just mini, throw it! I guess the coin is actually pretty decent so it brings out the competitveness in people.

Is it PDGA rules just without the 2m rule? Had a few instances where things were called differently.

It took the same amount of time to play as a regular tournament, that's crazy.

Otherwise the course kicks arse and for those of you who have never played mini, at least give it a shot. See ya next year.

2. Everyone who lent us mini-baskets – as always, couldn’t do it without you!
3. Discfunctional Disc Golf – thanks so much for sponsoring the Doubles, the CTP donation, getting us our event shirts and for the surprise 10th Annual wooden mini presentation – we will cherish them always!

5. Mini Disc Golf Federation – talk about tireless enthusiasm for Mini! Linc and Donnie traveled over ten hours to make it to our event, and they brought targets, treasures, trinkets and game! We hope you both enjoyed your first visit to Canada - your international diplomacy was top-notch, and you are welcome back here any old time.
6. Grant Richard - for pulling our bacon out of the fire by rescuing Al and the mini-baskets on short notice in the AM, after someone, ahem, slept in…
7. Donna Nancarrow – for looking after registration and mini sales.
8. Bob Harris – TD braintrust, human calculator, rare disc auctioneer, and donations to both the purse and to next year’s event.
9. The City of St. Thomas and Diane Couse – thanks again for letting us run wild in your lovely park for the day.

The Syndicate salutes Three-Time Whorled Champion Jeff Malton for his mastery of mini-disc golf skills - holding off challenges from an increasingly skilled field of players chasing the Whorled’s Ugliest Trophy, the coveted Gold-Stamped Mini, and La Fin Du Monde beer. Well Done!

Until next year!
